I came to UCSD from high school in fall 2008 with many personal insecurities and
areas where I lacked confidence. Over my college experience, God has transformed
me into a completely different person from what I was in fall 2008. During the first
two years of college, God gave me various life experiences that healed my heart and
gave me a passion that greatly influenced the path of my last two years of college.
Towards the end of my second year of college, I noticed and was quite concerned that we were not making any efforts to bring people into Upper Room. This led me to become a public relations officer during my third year and to deal with the logistical issues related to promoting Upper Room to the rest of the campus. A logical extension of this was my continuing in the role during my senior year, and reorganizing the university relations role as well.
I have been truly humbled in the ways that God has chosen to use me over the last few years, and I know that I have made a difference of some magnitude on the UCSD campus. I have learned what it means to be passionately serving God with what I have been given and have grown in so many ways in my relationship with Him and with other people. I have also had many unique experiences such as helping to run events of a few hundred people, putting on marketing campaigns across the entire UCSD campus, getting over $2,500 in university funding, and meeting local artists such as Pat Little and Pawnshop Kings.
To present a balanced picture, there were many days when serving in public relations was not fun, where it was physically and emotionally exhausting, where it meant hours of work without any earthly reward. And yet, if presented with this opportunity again, I would choose again to serve God as faithfully as possible during the last two years. The last two years have been life-‐changing and have been one of the factors that God has used to transform me into a completely different person during my college years.
This book contains all that I have learned over the past two years – not only related to public relations, but to leadership in general. I am giving a copy to the 2012-‐2013 public relations team of Upper Room, but the audience extends to the generations of Upper Room public relations people to come. This book reflects my heart for Upper Room and for reaching out to the UCSD campus in the ways that my skills are most useful.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Upper Room in this capacity for the last two years. I hope that you find this role as enjoyable and as life-‐changing as I have. I wish you and whoever continues in this role after you well and hope to encourage and support you in whatever way that I can.
